Leaders in
Governance
Click here for the report of the Leaders in Governance Conference in Newcastle on 29th April 2010 *********************************************** In one of those "What took you so long?" moments, we have finally registered our presence on the Institute's Directory. As you will know from this site, we are fully committed to the Institute of Fundraising and everything it stands for, and we are pleased to have a listing on the Directory of Consultants. ********************************************
As part of the
preparation for the forthcoming Governance conference,
we invited Trustees to complete our brief Governance Survey The survey remains
open for Trustees and Senior Staff to make their comments. ********************************************* In January 2010, 26-01 Director Carl Chapman was please to be awarded the coveted grade of Chartered Manager from the Chartered Management Institute which is dedicated to management and leadership. Just as a qualification can reflect academic ability within the field of management; Chartership recognises the application of professional skills and competences through an evaluation of professional practice, experience and commitment. As a result Chartership is viewed by many as a mark of quality assurance and a standard of best practice. Carl said, “Achieving this award represents a lot of hard work, but it was well worth it and I am delighted to be one of only around 1000 Chartered Managers in the UK.” For further information on the Chartered Management Institute or the Chartered Manager award please visit www.managers.org.uk ********************************* Collaboration Projects Carl, Gerry and Chris have been working on a number of Third Sector Collaboration projects recently. Changes in the funding environment and the advance of the ‘Procurement Agenda’ (see article below) mean that it is becoming more and more relevant for third sector organisations to find ways of working together effectively. We are currently working with a number of Citizens Advice Bureaux, Councils for Voluntary Services and Carers Organisations who are seeking to work together. There can be risks to collaborative working, however, these risks are often outweighed by the risks of not working together and there are a wide range of issues to consider. Gerry said, “There is no right or wrong method or one size fits all solution for third sector organisations who want to collaborate. There is only what is right for your circumstances and what you want to achieve.” For further information on collaboration or to discuss how we might be able to assist your organisation if you are thinking about collaboration please contact us info@26-01.com **************************************** The Procurement Agenda By Carl Chapman I am hearing an awful lot of talk about ‘the procurement agenda’ and ‘procurement and commissioning’ of services’ in my regular discussions with Third Sector organisations. I have to admit that despite my knowledge and experience I find these terms somewhat baffling when they are used by Third Sector organisations. I think we need to change our view on this as we are not procuring, we are actually selling our knowledge skills, experience and services, usually to the statutory sector. It is they’ who are procuring. In order to sell effectively we need to: · plan, plan, plan · understand ourselves and what it is that we are selling · understand our customers and their needs · be able to demonstrate the value of our offering to potential customers · deliver consistently to the required standards · be able to measure what we do · lead our organisations effectively I saw a great presentation given by Prof. Neil Rackham recently about strategic selling. One of his slides said: “The nice thing about not planning is that failure is not preceded by a period of worry and depression…” Is this you? For help on the strategic development of your organisation email info@26-01.com ******************************************* The notes from the ICT discussion facilitated by Carl at the recent Institute of Fundraising meeting Regional Meeting are here, and the report from the ICT hub is here *************************************************** The 26-01 Team have
been getting some of their thoughts down on "paper" - two publications
are availabe from Howard
Lake's Fundraising UK Website "Writing a Winning
Proposal" and the legendary **************************************************** The Gift Aid Petition (see below) has
exceeded 1300 signatures! But if you have yet to sign, please
support this initiative - it could give a real boost to Charities
across the UK. **************************************************** 26-01 are working with Hunters Gate Community Asociation on
a Community Survey for Ushaw Moor. If you live in the village,
click here to see the details. ********************************************* SIGN UP FOR GIFT AID! 26-01 would like to ask ask if you would be prepared to add your name to this Downing St Petition. It’s about the position of higher rate taxpayers, who currently keep the benefit of their higher rate deduction when they make donations under the Gift Aid Scheme. The petition is asking that the full benefit of the tax rebate should go to the Charity (following extensive research which shows that higher rate donors are not motivated at all by the benefit to their own bank balance, and would prefer their chosen charity to benefit!) Practising what we preach! As part of
their commitment to community service, Carl and Gerry are respectively
Chair
and Treasurer of Chester-le-Street Citizens Advice Bureau, and on
Tuesday 8th
September they were in York to collect the award for Trustee Board of
the Year
from the Chair of Citizens Advice, Hillary Watkins. “As ever
with such awards, it’s not just about us,” said Carl; “it’s
about
a
very
effective
Manager,
a
committed
team
of
paid
and
volunteer
staff,
and
a
strong
Trustee
Board.” Nevertheless,
it’s
good
to
know
that,
when
this
small
team
of
consultants
puts
their
theory
into
the
real
world,
it
really
does
work! Carl and
Gerry will be writing up the story of how this small and struggling CAB
was
turned around in less than 2 years, in the hope that other struggling
organisations can draw on their experiences.
*********************************************** Gerry and Carl are hard at work developing MIND SPORTS
WORLD, a new Charity for all manner of Mind Sports, working with
Culture Quarter and the Governing Bodies of Mind Sports disciplines to
promote participation at all levels. Keep up to date with us at www.mindsportsworld.org ************************************************ 26-01 RESEARCHES FOR VONNE Chris, Carl and Gerry have just completed a fairly epic
piece of work towards the report published on 20th May 2009 by VONNE, SURVIVING OR
THRIVING You can see the full report here : "This was a complex piece of work, produced to a very tight
timescale," said Gerry. "Against a background of rapidly shifting
multiple agendas, everybody concerned can be really proud of this
tremendously useful report." 26-01 are pleased to have been able to work with VONNE in
this endeavour. *************************************************** INSTITUTE OF FUNDRAISING NORTH EAST CONFERENCE The
2009 Regional Conference took place on Wednesday, 6th May, at
Castlegate, in Newcastle upon Tyne. An excellent day, and
excellent
venue, over 100 people attended a wide range of workshops, as always
organised by the team of enthusiastic volunteers who form the Regional
Executive Committee. The Powerpoint presentation from Gerry's
sessions on TRUSTEESHIP

it never fails
to get people to ask where it came from or what it means. 26-01 was
founded on
the 26th of January 2006 when three friends who had been
talking
about working together for some time finally took the plunge and set up
their
company. Those three friends were Carl Chapman, |
